Response Note #2- Due Monday before class.

Hello Class,

I realize I am posting this late, so let's say you HAVE to do one response by Friday (reflection one).

You don't have to do this one until you walk in to class Monday:

The prompt: You are telling a friend about this essay, and then you tell them the ad you are analyzing. Your friend ask "How are you going to analyze it? What will your focus be?"

In other words, write a 200 word response that outlines your thesis and that explains why the thesis (the analysis) is worthwhile and answers the "so what" question of the thesis. Remember, you need to answer the "so what" question, and that you are looking at the HOW the ad creates meaning (not the what it means).

Helpful links and examples:
Here's an example of an ad analysis: listen to the language used and pay attention to the details (audience, placement, and language)

Here's a sample essay (while this essay does not specifically point out the rhetorical appeals, the essay does analyze them, without using the vocabulary). Now that you know all about ethos, logos, pathos, and kiaros, you can imagine where that language would go.

This essay is what a 'B' (B-minus) paper looks like. We'll discuss why it is not an A in class. Here's a C-plus, C- ish paper

Let me explain my thesis. The ad I'm using is a Campbell's 'Select Harvest' commercial. This ad states that Campbell's 'Select Harvest' soup is healthier then Progresso's 'Light' soups. Most of the women portrayed in this commercial seem dumbfounded and surprised by reading the ingredients found on Progresso 'Light' soups. The attitude and the words these women use is a clear indication that the soup, despite being 'light' is not light at all and is actually made full of harmful chemicals that imply danger to your health. This information is clearly visible with the words the women are using such as 'MSG' 'Monosodium glu-glutamate?' and 'Sodium, sodium, sodium.' Most of these are bad for your health and thus the women state it out loud so the viewers are aware of what the company is putting in their soups. The commercial then attempts to persuade the viewer to accept that Campbell's 'Select Harvest' uses natural ingredients by having the women say words that promote a healthy diet such as 'Pasta with whole grain' 'natural sea salt.' and '80 calories.' Through out the majority of the commercial there are captions at the bottom of the screen that backup the statements made by the women and the narrator herself. This serves as a form of sources that backs up the statement that Campbells soup is a better choice then Progresso Soups using the finest.

Hey, so I have to write an essay of a rhetorical analysis on an advertisement. I have chosen a Nutrisystem advertisement that captures men who want to lose weight without losing their manhood by using meanly stereotyped language and visual content. I will show and explain how they are using different strategies to attract the male audience that is overweight, wants to lose weight but still feel manly about it. The commercial starts by featuring two Pro-football players, who represent the credibility of the product, shouting in a narrative way “GAME TIME!” with a sports like stage as their background crowded with spectators. This strategy relates the entire commercial to sports, one of the main stereotypes related to men. As they strive into the explanation of the product in a game-narrating kind of way, first they use strong, loud tones to show how much weight they have lost. This strategy gives the audience the typical “Before & After” example that builds credibility and persuades the viewer to believe in the product. They use phrases such as “eat like a man, real food for real guys” or “Nutrisystem for man lets you eat like a man and be like one too” making the audience feel like this is a manly product. Second, they show visuals of the ideal of manly types of dishes such as Pizza, Pasta, Burgers, Tacos, associating them to food that is typically consumed during manly sport activities. Third, they clinically show how the product works, adding more credibility and persuasion. Finally they explain how easy it is to use and the promotions that they have to offer to incentive the audience to purchase the product quick.

Hey Bro, I need your outlook about this essay I have to write on analyzing the tools used to influences viewers in advertisements. So, we had to pick an ad and I chose the "2014 KIA Soul" advertisement. It's a bit complicated but we have to break down the ad and show how they are influential on their audience. Also, we have to describe just who that audience is; are they males, are they females, do they focus on animal lovers or on social activists...etc. What I've analysed from the 2014 KIA Soul ad is that they use hamsters to appeal to the soft-hearted people of society, but show them getting fit to show that hardworking nature needed for the KIA Soul. However, not only do the hamsters get fit but show up to a red carpet with screaming fans as if they were movie stars which gives off an image that the KIA Soul is a high class, elegant car. With those kinds of images its showing the viewers that "This is fame", "This is how you become recognized", but in actuality it isn't any different than most vehicles out there. Its being falsely portrayed and doesn't even give any facts of how the KIA Soul actually functions.

My essay topic is going to be about smoking and how people should quit because of their effects on people.Smokers do not like to be asked if they know what their beloved cigarette is doing to their health. Yes, they know. They've taken health class too.
But if you love someone who's hooked on cigarettes, chances are you still try to aim for a quit date not just for your loved one's own health, but for the health of everyone around you as well. It's no surprise that children of smokers are more likely to smoke, but get this: Even if you quit smoking before they're born, your kids might pick up the habit. Even those who dabbled in a high school nicotine habit had children who were at least 3 times more likely to smoke than those whose parents never picked up cigarettes. You're wasting so much money that by the time you get to 50-60 years of age you won't have any savings.People aren't sure why kids of teen smokers mimic their parents, but at least some in the might think it could be genetics.Yet, my ad shows rhetorical devices on quitting cigarettes and some effects. -Leonel

Ok so, my newest prompt asks me to tell you about the essay that I have to write for my English class. The commercial that I will be analyzing with be the banned AXE commercial. This commercial shows the effect and non-effects of the Axe being sprayed on the male species (i.e. animal and human). Majority of the ad shows that once the male species comes in contact with the spray, the opposite sex draws nears and finds the species to be more sexier than ever. My question is, what ingredient in this product captures a woman and taps into her sensuality. Does she really believe what the ad is really portraying, or is she caught in the image of what she thinks will happen if a gentleman walks by with AXE on? What about the guy at the end that gets no play whatsoever because he’ not wearing it. It is my belief this ad is set out to capture the emotional state of the women. I myself have smelled a guy with AXE on and it in no way made me feel any different from the SEXIER guy that was sitting next to him with nothing.

In a Reese’s Puff cereal commercial we can see that the main protagonists are teenage children whom are getting ready to leave for school. This information is backed up by the fact that the song in the background claims “they make the morning time epic”. The fact that the children in the video are African American, and their race is commonly stereotyped by this genre of music, can make my theory about analyzing the impact that televised stereotypes have on our society today. Does it mean that our African American youth listened to rap before it was televised and is now used as means of an ethnic attraction? Or could it be that it has become a trend because the media shows it should be as so? What messages has the media implanted into our minds and why? Racism has been the cause of many wars in our country, is this a way of war? Rap is often referred to as vulgar and music for the lower class, the media could be diminishing the image of the African American race to display a sense of power in the ethnic groups of our society by planting seeds in the young minds of African American children that claim they should do and act in a vulgar way because the media says you should.

Hi Loren, I just started my next semester of classes and I signed up for English Composition 1. My first essay is a rhetorical analysis of a commercial advertisement, specifically, the Publix Thanksgiving Salt and Pepper Commercial. Loren responds, “How are you going to analyze it? What will your focus be? To begin, my thesis will analyze the effectiveness of tradition-based content by “Brands” such as Publix that promotes their brand name and products. I will discuss numerous techniques used, beginning with the audience the commercial is targeting. The symbols used within the ad that takes the consumer back in time to the first thanksgiving the pilgrims had with the Native Americans. The use of fall colors that reminds the consumer that it’s Fall and time for family and friends to come together for Thanksgiving. In addition, the traditional foods that are displayed throughout the ad helps to solidify the use and effectiveness of what a traditional thanksgiving meal consists of. I will also discuss the emotions the commercial wants to consumer to feel as it takes them back in time when they enjoyed thanksgiving dinners with family and friends. These are but a few of tradition based content, imagery and symbols used by Brands such as Publix that ignites tradition within the consumer.

Hi, I have to write an essay in which I have to analyze an add. My Thesis will be based on exploring the negatively influence for children’s fast food marketing. I have chosen an add from MacDonald’s industries. Framed in a picture with vivid colors that represent the giant industry of MacDonald’s are posing some children of both sexes, very smiling where they big smile represent the happiness they are feeling by the fact they are owners of a beautiful box, which is the dream of every child to have. The images that the “happy meals box” displays about children are full of happiness, will create a life-long adults big consumers of fast food, this also create emotional attachments. The “happy meal box”, and the used of toys is a marketing tool to attracted children to eat fast food. One of the negative effects of this type advertising on children today is the grown of childhood obesity, which has had a faster growing health concern. Another negative effect is the economic impact in our families, because such advertising is motivating the public to buy or consume things that are out of reach of their pocket. Though commercials, cartons characters, toys and other type of advertisements, these companies “brainwash” our children. Big industries continue to targeting children to eat fast food more and more frequently.

Hey Monica, I need your opinion on an essay I’m writing in English class. The essay has to be based on an ad. The ad I choose was cover girl, the one with Ellen DeGeneres. This ad is about one of their new products. The product is a wrinkle free foundation that is supposed to make you look young. Covering the wrinkles that a liquid foundation would sink into. This foundation gives the buyer a young look. Helping the consumer with the ageing look. The ad includes a famous actress that it in her forties, and compares the skin to an apricot. For the thesis I was thinking something along this; “Cover girl isn’t just another brand of makeup, it’s a new young, sexy and intelligent you. This new product will bring out the beautiful and strong women in you.” I wanted to know what you think about this thesis from the information I’ve given you. I feel as if I’m going in the right direction but something is telling me I need more. So I’m looking for the opinion of someone else. I hope to hear your comments soon. They’ll be much appreciated. Keep in mind I’m going towards a sexist on women and how they should look. What society it telling them is okay.
Thanks

Hi friend, so I am doing an essay for my English class based on an ad. I chose to do it on the Barbie doll. Girls believe that they should be tall and skinny and have friends that look a certain way. Girls are learning that your body is what’s most important in order to be happy and popular. Not being that enough, now they have a doll that identifies each country. The ad I chose is the Barbie dolls of the world, featuring the Mexico, Holland and India doll. Each doll is wearing what the ad shows as the traditional dress each country represents. The doll includes a pet, travel case and a passport. In some research that I have done, Mattel the creator of the Barbie doll, states that the Mexico doll as well as the rest of the dolls of the world are educating girls of cultural differences and traditions. What it is really doing is stereotyping. Girls are learning that because a person has long black wavy hair, brown eyes and a certain skin color, then this is where they are from. My thesis would be something like; At an early age girls are learning stereotyping through Barbie dolls based on their physical features and dressing style.

My thesis will be, in this case Symantec uses rhetoric appeals to imply that by buying their product children will be less exposed to the dangers in the virtual life. What will your focus be on the Ethos, Logos and Pathos used in the ad. I am also explaining the metaphor used in the ad. The Symantec advertisement shows a young girl which appears to be between 7 and 8 years of age in her bedroom on a laptop. The bedroom window behind her is open, exposing a pedophile who watches her perversely, a woman with her breasts exposed leaning promiscuously on a man wearing glasses and holding a beer. This advertisement uses Logos by portraying a metaphor, in small font at the bottom right corner of the ad that reads, “Best to keep some windows closed.” Although the viewer cannot see what the young girl is doing on the laptop the imagery and metaphor create a clear understanding that she is browsing the web. The advertisement is targeted at parents to remind them that the dangers their children can face online are just as dangerous as real life. Symantec used metaphors, emotional appeals and imagery in their advertisement to not only have the parents look at the ad as more than just the product they are trying to sell but also to how the product would appeal to their life.
